West Africa Network for Peacebuilding: Call for Applications

Training Course:

Please find below the information to a training course organised by the West  Africa Peacebuilding Institute in
Accra (Ghana) from 2nd to 20th September 2013. The deadline to register is August 2013 and there is a participation fee of $1000.
The participants are selected from various fields and institutions including NGOs, the Academia, governmental agencies, regional intergovernmental bodies such as ECOWAS, African Union, the UN, private practitioners; students (tertiary), corporate organizations.
The training covers a range of activities on Theories and Practice of Peacebuilding; Dialogue and Mediation; Women and Gender Mainstreaming into Peacebuilding; Youth and Peace Education; Early Warning and Early Response, Natural Resource Conflict Management; Human Security and Peacebuilding, and more.
The West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) is one of the leading peacebuilding organizations in Africa. The mandate of WANEP is to build the capacity of peacebuilding, development and human rights practitioners in Africa and worldwide on peace and security issues to promote and protect human security through context specific tools and indigenous techniques. To fulfil its mandate, WANEP in partnership with the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), holds each year a three-week training session in peacebuilding in Accra, Ghana.
WAPI was established to provide specialized, intensive, and culturally sensitive training in conflict transformation and peacebuilding to individuals, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), the Business Community, Policy-makers, Government institutions and other relevant actors from West Africa and worldwide. For the past years, WAPI has provided the space and platform for the actualization of WANEP’s vision for the prevention and resolution of conflicts in Africa. Since 2002 to date WAPI has trained over 400 practitioners in Peacebuilding Paradigms; human rights; conflict, Human Security; Dialogue and Mediation; Youth and Peace Education; Gender and Peacebuilding, Early warning and Early response; etc.
Aim and Objectives of WAPI:
The major aim of WAPI is to provide knowledge and expertise on peacebuilding and conflict prevention to reduce and eliminate the frequency and severity of violent conflict.
The specific objectives are however:
  • To develop action-oriented capacity for conflict transformation and peacebuilding
  • To increase the number of competent, informed and active peacebuilding practitioners in West Africa and worldwide
  • To provide quality training in peacebuilding at a reduced cost
  • To develop context specific and indigenous models of conflict transformation and peacebuilding that can be integrated with existing models
  • To provide skills to respond to workplace disputes in order to increase productivity for national development
  • And to bridge the gap between policy and practice in peacebuilding
