The tools for instant, global, visual communication now fit in your backpack: a video camera, laptop, editing software and hard drive. The era of the backpack video journalist is here. It is revolutionizing the worldwide exchange of information and ideas — and changing the way we live.
This five-day intensive programme teaches the full range of skills required for effective visual storytelling—from idea development and pitching to shooting, producing, scriptwriting, narrating and editing.   It will teach you to produce powerful TV and web productions. Information is power, and this programme help you harness that power to document and to change the world.

ELIGIBILITY:

This programme is open to journalists from the developing world who have a minimum of two years working experience as a journalist.  It helps if you have previous experience in photography and some facility with cameras but this is not a requirement.  To get the full benefit from this programme it is helpful to use your own equipement.  You must be able to demonstrate a commitment to a career in journalism in your country and have a good level in spoken and written English.

FUNDING:

Thomson Reuters Foundation offers the following bursaries:

  • Fully-funded bursaries for journalists from the developing world/countries in political transition working for organisations with no resources for training. Bursary to include economy air travel, accommodation and a small daily allowance (please note Thomson Reuters Foundation does not cover any visa costs).
  • Part-funded bursaries for journalists from the developing world/countries in political transition working for organisations with some resources for training.  Thomson Reuters Foundation will waive the tuition cost of £1,000  – travel and accommodation to be covered by participant (please note Thomson Reuters Foundation does not cover any visa costs).
  • Non-funded bursaries available to all journalists working for organisations who have funding for training or have their own means of funding.  Participant would need to cover tuition cost of £1,000 air travel, visa, accommodation and living costs.
  • SUBMISSIONS:

    A short biography of no more than 250 words
    A statement detailing your work and what you hope to gain from the course
    A recent example of your published work
